Asgard swimmers make a splash with Olympic trial results

2012-03-21 Olympic Trials (Darragh McDonald & Ciara Weadick)WITH THE London Games 2012 looming, Asgard Swimming Club members Ciara Weadick, Emer Kelly, Liadan Long and Darragh Mcdonald took part in the National Long Course Championships and Olympic trials with fantastic results.

Darragh Mcdonald continues to thrive with a new personal best in his preparation and training for London Paralympics 2012 this will be Darragh’s second time representing Ireland in the Paralympics, having won a silver medal in Beijing in 2008 for the 400m Freestyle.

Ciara Weadick achieved the qualifying times for the National Squad for her 200m, 400m and 800m Freestyle. Ciara only, just 13 years of age, has also recently been selected to compete and represent Leinster in Stockport, UK, in April this year. This is a fantastic achievement for the young swimmer who trains very hard at home in Arklow with her club, as well as travelling to high performance training three times a week in the NAC which requires her to leave Arklow each morning at 3.30 a.m..

Since things resumed after the New Year; the club welcomed more new members and continues to thrive with fantastic achievements from different groups in the swimming club in local and national competitions.

Some young members recently took part in the NAC’S Annual Charity Gala and Mini Minnows Gala in the National Aquatic Centre achieving new personal bests. Well done to Gavin Mcinerney, Conor Mcinerney, Jake Rushe, Robbie Savage, Rossa Byrne and Jazmine Arthur.

Last Sunday quite a few members of the Asgard S.C took park in the Wexford Spring Gala with lots of new personal bests and medals in first, second and third place. It was a great day to be had by all and the results showed their determination and training has paid off. Congratulations to Rory O’carroll, Liadan Long, Freja and Caimen Kavanagh, Jessica Osypov, Abbie Healy, Maria Susan Tubarick, Robyn Nuzum, Ciara Hannon, Hazel and Hannah Woods and Jake Rushe

The members of Asgard S.C will be participating in a sponsored swim on the April 1 in the Coral Leisure centre to raise funds for the club. The swimmers aim to swim a target of 200,000 metres in three hours.
